In recent days, events have occurred that have seriously influenced public opinion, attracted society's attention, and created significant uproar. Accusations of an attempted coup d'état, a threat to the constitutional order, and a conspiracy against the country's security are now openly voiced. At the forefront of the individuals implicated in these allegations is academician Ramiz Mehdiyev, former head of the Presidential Administration and for many years one of the main pillars of power.
Despite such a significant uproar and the emergence of an event that has shaken society, why are a number of former and current officials, deputies, and pro-government politicians who have long been represented in power remaining silent? Many of those who do speak limit themselves to general, “status-appropriate” remarks. Many do not express a concrete position. They seem to be in a waiting position. But what are they waiting for?
“State your position!” - The author of this call is the late National Leader Heydar Aliyev, who left a significant mark on the political memory of modern Azerbaijan.
This call, voiced in 1993 – a pivotal period for the country – was addressed not only to a specific situation but to political and public responsibility as a whole. But is the voice of that call heard today?
Silence regarding the “Ramiz Mehdiyev case” cannot be explained solely by personal fear. There is a deeper problem of political culture here – irresponsible loyalism. This not only indicates a lack of individual courage but also proves a severed connection with society. People see, hear, and ask questions. However, the people they elected and trusted have retreated behind a wall of silence, remaining silent.
Silence, at times, is a position. But in the current situation, it is a cowardly position.
The question arises: if an individual who led the state's most strategic structure for many years is implicated in such serious accusations, why are members of parliament, representatives of the ruling party, and former statesmen not expressing a position?
It must not be forgotten that expressing a position is not merely a criticism of a former official – it is an attitude towards the state's past, present, and future. If individuals who have been part of a system remain without a position even at this sensitive moment... After all, society expects a position from them.
This issue is already being widely discussed on social networks and in public debates. Citizens ask questions, but the individuals who should answer these questions – deputies, former officials, pro-government politicians – remain silent.
Heydar Aliyev used to say: “A statesman does not remain silent in difficult moments – he speaks, he shows a position.” Today is precisely one of those difficult moments. It is time to speak responsibly, to show a clear and honest position.
State your position, gentlemen!
