In modern homes, extension cords are widely used to power electrical appliances. However, their improper use can lead to serious consequences.

According to Modern.az, Professor, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Aleksey Yurasov warned that many fire incidents occur precisely due to the improper use of extension cords.

According to the expert, appliances with heating elements and motors (e.g., vacuum cleaners, electric radiators, convectors, fan heaters, and microwave ovens), when operated via an extension cord, can cause cables to overheat, insulation to melt, and short circuits. Since the power of these devices ranges between 1000–3000 watts, prolonged operation places an excessive load on the electrical network.

Yurasov also stated that it is unacceptable to connect refrigerators and freezers, as well as washing machines and dishwashers, with an extension cord: “These appliances should only be connected directly to powerful and separate electrical outlets.”

The specialist added that when choosing an extension cord, it is important to pay attention to its technical specifications, power capacity, wire thickness, grounding, and certification level. Reddening, cracks, or changes in odor on the device's casing are indicators that it should be replaced immediately.

According to Yurasov, safety is paramount: “Attempting to save on proper electrical connections can ultimately damage very expensive equipment and pose a threat to human life.”
