The 900th anniversary of Ajami Abubakr oglu Nakhchivani, a prominent representative of Azerbaijani architecture and the founder of the Nakhchivan architectural school, will be celebrated.
Modern.az reports that President Ilham Aliyev has signed an Order in this regard.
The Order states:
"In 2026, the 900th anniversary of Ajami Abubakr oglu Nakhchivani, a prominent representative of Azerbaijani architecture and the founder of the Nakhchivan architectural school, will be completed.
Ajami Nakhchivani is a great artist who gave a new direction to medieval Azerbaijani architecture and brought elegance and dynamism to the architectural style of the era. His activity was associated with the city of Nakhchivan, the capital of the powerful Atabay State, which holds a special place in the history of Azerbaijani statehood, and one of the cultural, scientific, trade, and art centers of the Middle East. Ajami Nakhchivani's creativity is one of the clear manifestations of the rise of Azerbaijani cultural and social thought in the 12th century. Among the magnificent monuments in the city of Nakhchivan, the Momine Khatun Mausoleum and the Yusif ibn Kuseyir Tomb, products of Ajami's genius, hold a worthy place among the masterpieces of the Islamic world. These monumental structures are immortal works of art, distinguished by their delicate composition and aesthetic perfection, possessing unparalleled beauty. Ajami's brilliant legacy played the role of a school and had a strong influence on the architecture of Azerbaijan and Middle Eastern countries in subsequent centuries.
At the initiative of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, the 850th anniversary of Ajami Nakhchivani was solemnly celebrated in Azerbaijan in 1976. The inclusion of the powerful architect's 900th anniversary in the list of anniversaries celebrated within the framework of UNESCO is an important step in promoting the richness of the Azerbaijani people's centuries-old culture more widely on an international scale.
Guided by paragraph 32 of Article 109 of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with the aim of ensuring the celebration of the 900th anniversary of the great architect Ajami Nakhchivani, who left a deep and indelible mark on the development of medieval Azerbaijani architectural art, I decide:
1. The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, together with the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, shall prepare and implement an action plan related to the 900th anniversary of Ajami Nakhchivani, a prominent figure in Azerbaijani architecture.
2. The Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan shall resolve issues arising from this Order".
