“Turkey is against a US military intervention in Iran. Turkey's political circles can be understood. US military interventions in Iraq and Syria in the past created serious problems for Turkey. Therefore, it is believed in Ankara that a possible US intervention in Iran will create additional problems for Turkey”.
Modern.az reports that these views were expressed by political commentator Elkhan Shahinoglu, who commented on the tension in Iran-US relations.
“For this reason, Ankara has intensified contacts with Washington to prevent an intervention scenario. In turn, Tehran has decided to use Ankara's capabilities. After US President Donald Trump announced a halt to contacts with Iranian officials amid the massacres in Iran, Tehran appealed to Ankara. Iranian and Turkish Foreign Ministers Abbas Araqchi and Hakan Fidan spoke by phone twice within 24 hours. Tehran wants Ankara to convince Washington to abandon intervention scenarios. After talks with Abbas Araqchi, Hakan Fidan met with the US Ambassador to Ankara and Special Representative for Syria, Tom Barrack. In addition to being an ambassador, Tom Barrack is a close friend of Donald Trump and has direct contact with the President over the head of the Secretary of State. Barrack will convey Ankara's request to Trump”, - E. Shahinoglu said.
According to the expert, if the US President decides to intervene in Iran, he will not take Turkey's interests into account:
“Although Turkey supports the calming of unrest in Iran and the territorial integrity of this state, they have not forgotten in the brotherly country that the regime in Iran has supported the PKK for years”.
According to the political scientist, if Donald Trump has made a decision regarding Iran, he will try to implement it: "This is not his personal decision. Regime change in Iran is a long-standing desire of Washington, and the US President plans to seize the opportunity that has arisen".
