A number of works have been carried out by the Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency in the bus fleet and payment system for urban passenger transportation. As a result, the implementation of a new network has begun, and 8 routes have been put into operation.
Modern.az reports that Anar Rzayev, Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency (AYNA), stated this at a round table dedicated to the implementation of the "State Program for the Improvement of Transport Infrastructure in Baku and Surrounding Areas for 2025–2030" for the past year.
He noted that 395 new electric and CNG-powered buses have been put into operation in Baku, Sumgayit, and Absheron.
"Innovations have also been introduced regarding fare payment, and the possibility of paying with a bank card has been created. In total, the number of buses with cashless payment has reached 1800. This figure was 1000 buses in 2022. At the same time, 98 buses have been added to the route lines operating towards Sumgayit city and Saray settlement, creating the capacity to transport 40,000 passengers. A network of special traffic lanes has been created in Baku to ensure bus intervals. In total, 114 kilometers of lanes have been organized on nearly 40 streets and avenues.
Based on the results of the last 4 years, there has been a total increase of 67.3 million in bus passenger transportation in Baku and its suburbs. A 32 percent increase is observed in the number of buses put into daily service. While 1720 buses were put into daily service in 2022, 1950 in 2023, and 2160 in 2024, this figure is currently close to 2300.
The share of cashless fare payment has reached 85 percent. At the same time, the share of environmentally friendly buses is 55 percent," he said.
