The US has called on Syria to reject Chinese telecommunication systems.
Modern.az reports that the US administration stated that Syria's reliance on Chinese technologies in the telecommunications sector contradicts Washington's interests and national security.
This message was conveyed during a meeting in San Francisco between a US State Department delegation and Syria's Minister of Communications, Abdulsalam Haykal.
Washington has been closely coordinating with Damascus since 2024, following President Ahmed al-Sharaa's overthrow of Bashar al-Assad. It is reported that Syria is considering the possibility of acquiring Chinese technologies for the modernization of mobile towers and internet infrastructure.
The US side urged Syria to use technologies from American or allied countries in the telecommunications sector. Official Washington emphasized that Chinese companies could pose risks related to data security. China, however, has repeatedly rejected these claims.
It should be noted that Syria's telecommunications infrastructure relies primarily on Chinese technologies due to US sanctions imposed for many years, with Huawei equipment particularly dominant in the market. (Reuters)
