The 102nd Russian military base located in Gyumri has not hindered Armenia's Western outlook.
Modern.az reports that this was stated by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
At a briefing in Yerevan, he answered a question regarding whether the base hinders Armenia's path to the West.
Considering the question to be incorrectly phrased, the Prime Minister said: "Armenia is not going anywhere."
"You are distorting my words. I have never said that Armenia is moving towards the West. As for membership in the European Union, I have spoken about it in the context of the Eurasian Economic Union. We are not yet at the stage where the Russian military base would hinder our Western outlook. If we see that it hinders our outlook, then we will consider: if there is no problem, how should we proceed?"- Pashinyan said.
The Prime Minister reiterated that Armenia has no intention of worsening relations with Russia or doing anything contrary to its interests. He stated that Armenia's task is to be guided solely by its own interests.
It should be recalled that the 102nd Russian military base is located in Armenia in accordance with the interstate agreement concluded between Moscow and Yerevan in 1995. On August 20, 2010, Russia and Armenia extended the agreement on the deployment of the base until 2044.
