Starting from March 10, snow measurement work has commenced in the high mountainous regions of the country.
According to information provided to Modern.az by the State Service for Control over the Use and Protection of Water Resources, expeditions have been organized in 5 directions for this purpose.
The main purpose of conducting the expeditions is to determine the snow-water resources in the country's territory, as well as to forecast the expected water levels in rivers in April, May, and June – during the spring-summer high-water period.
Joint groups consisting of specialists from the National Hydrometeorology Service under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources are participating in the snow measurement work, with the organization of the State Service for Control over the Use and Protection of Water Resources under the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency.
In total, snow measurement work will be carried out along 36 routes. 16 of these routes cover the Greater Caucasus, 7 the Lesser Caucasus, 8 the mountainous areas of the East Zangezur and Karabakh economic regions, and 5 the mountainous areas of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
The studies will be conducted in the river basins located in the Balakan, Zagatala, Gakh, Sheki, Oghuz, Gabala, Guba, and Gusar districts of the Greater Caucasus, in the Dashkasan, Gadabay, and Goygol districts of the Lesser Caucasus, as well as in the Kalbajar, Lachin, Shusha, and Khojavand districts, which are part of the East Zangezur and Karabakh economic regions, and in the Shahbuz and Ordubad districts of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
During the snow measurement work, the height and weight of the snow cover will be measured, and the snow density and water equivalent will be determined.
