Professor Rafiq Mehdiyev, who served as rector of Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU) from 1993-2000 and worked at Istanbul Technical University from 2000-2020, passed away this morning.

The deceased's relatives informed Modern.az about this.

He was a world-renowned scientist in internal combustion engines and the inventor of Turkey's first domestic tractor engine.

One of the scientist's latest inventions, who authored over 300 scientific works and nearly 15 inventions, is a diesel engine operating on liquid gas, and this invention achieved great success in Turkey.

During his time working in the brotherly country, Rafiq Mehdiyev actively participated in the development of the defense industry.
 
Several of the scientist's inventions were patented in some Western countries, including England, Italy, Germany, as well as Russia and Japan. Among the more than 20 scientists he mentored are citizens of the USA, Germany, India, Iraq, Poland, and Ukraine.

Rafiq Israfil oglu Mehdiyev was born on December 5, 1936, in Jabrayil city. In 1958, he graduated from the mechanics faculty of the then Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute (now Technical University), defended his candidate's dissertation in 1964, and his doctoral dissertation in 1981.
