Major General Vladislav Safonov, who served as commandant of the special status region of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast and adjacent districts, has passed away.

Modern.az reports that this was stated in a report by Russian media.

Safonov "Iron General" was known by the nickname. From 1988 to 1990, Safonov made significant contributions to the protection of Karabakh and Azerbaijani lands, and their Azerbaijani population, from Armenian occupation. It was thanks to his principled stance that relative stability was ensured in Karabakh during those years. For this, the general was sentenced to death at the Armenians' “miatsum” rally.

The general, who later moved to Rostov-on-Don, was subjected to several assassination attempts by Armenian terrorists.

General Vladislav Safonov passed away on November 20, 2025, in Volgograd Oblast due to a stroke. He was 84 years old.

May Allah have mercy on him.
