The UN Security Council yesterday adopted a resolution supporting the "Trump plan" regarding Gaza.
The resolution envisages the cessation of war in the Gaza Strip, the establishment of a transitional governing p, and the deployment of an international stabilization force, i.e., peacekeepers, to the region.
This, in turn, re-actualizes the question of whether Azerbaijan will participate in the process. Previously, expert opinions stated that Azerbaijan's participation in the peace process would be possible after the approval of the peace plan. Regarding this, the "Reuters" agency disseminated information citing a source in the government.
According to the source, Azerbaijan can only consider such a matter after military operations have completely ceased. “We do not want to put our soldiers at risk. This can only be possible after the fighting has completely stopped,” the source stated.
It was noted that the decision to send troops must be approved by parliament.
In a statement to Modern.az, political scientist Eldar Jafarov stated that Azerbaijan is interested in peace in the Middle East:
“Azerbaijan is always a proponent of international law. Not only in the Middle East, but also in Europe concerning Kosovo, and in Asia regarding issues from Iraq to Afghanistan, Azerbaijani peacekeepers have always fulfilled their obligations. Now there is also the Gaza issue. Firstly, Azerbaijan is an interested party in the Middle East. Our country has not remained indifferent to the recent events in Syria. Azerbaijan also participated in the meeting held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, within the framework of the international peace agenda. Therefore, Azerbaijan is interested in peace. However, the accusations by Iran and other states that Azerbaijan directly supports Israel are baseless and false.
“If the “Trump plan” is accepted by Israel and Hamas, peacebuilding in the Middle East can begin.”
The political scientist emphasized that the participation of Azerbaijani peacekeepers in Gaza is directly within our country's interests:
“Azerbaijan always participates unequivocally in peacebuilding efforts. This has also been demonstrated in Afghanistan and Iraq. The restoration of schools and the protection of their security, as well as the participation of our military personnel in strategic facilities, demonstrate our experience in this field. Therefore, the participation of Azerbaijani army personnel in Gaza is important and must definitely happen.”
