In a globalizing world, the scope of artificial intelligence's use and its user base are steadily increasing. Everyone, including Muslims, uses artificial intelligence, regardless of their religion or language.

It is noteworthy what Muslims should pay attention to when using artificial intelligence, and what is considered haram (forbidden) in this context.

The renowned religious figure, Akhund of Icherisheher “Juma” Mosque,  Haji Surkhay Mammadli told Modern.az  in a statement that, in fact, the topic applies to artificial intelligence just as it applies to the internet, telephones, television, and other technological means:

"Because artificial intelligence is simply a technology - a tool. In Islam, the main principle is that a ruling is often determined not by the tool itself, but by the manner in which it is used.

A Muslim must pay attention to several important issues when using any technological means, including artificial intelligence. Firstly, the issue of slander and backbiting arises. Spreading false information about someone, sharing edited audio or visuals via artificial intelligence on social media, constitutes slander and defamation. This is among the major sins. The second important issue is related to lying and deception. Using artificial intelligence to mislead people, create fake material, or claim someone else's work as one's own creates responsibility from both Sharia and legal perspectives. The third main issue is related to moral responsibility. Thus, creating immoral content, producing materials that promote violence, or generating content that contradicts the moral values of society are also considered major sins. Technology may change, but the essence of sin does not change".

Regarding Muslims' use of artificial intelligence, Haji Surkhay Mammadli further stated the following:

“As for the question, ‘Is the use of artificial intelligence generally permissible?’ I would like to reiterate that throughout history, Muslims have not been against new technologies. On the contrary, they have contributed to their development. For example, Al-Khwarizmi made revolutionary innovations in mathematics and systematized the science of algebra. Ibn Sina brought great innovations in medicine, and his works were used as textbooks in universities worldwide for centuries. They managed the “technological revolution” of their time; they did not shy away from it. They saw scientific development not as a threat, but as an opportunity.

From this perspective, artificial intelligence is also an opportunity. It can be used as a tool for what is haram (forbidden), or it can serve what is halal (permissible). The issue is not in the technology itself, but in the intention and responsibility of the person using it".
