Today is February 20, the 2nd day of Ramadan.
Fasting is noted as one of the five pillars of Islam. During this time, not only eating and drinking are prohibited. In addition to about 10 unequivocally forbidden acts, there are also a number of controversial situations. Doubts arise as to whether these actions invalidate the fast.
Speaking to Modern.az on the topic, Mübariz Rəhimov, the imam of Pirallahı district mosque, stated that pleasurable acts such as playing games, listening to music, and dancing do not invalidate the fast but reduce the reward of worship.
Touching upon the topic of perfume use, the theologian noted that although there are two different cases here – smelling “perfume” and flower scent – it is possible to give the same ruling:
"It is permissible to smell flowers. It is mentioned in hadiths that for a fasting person, smelling only a narcissus flower is "makruh" (disliked). That is, it does not invalidate the fast but is not commendable. However, using perfume does not invalidate the fast in any case. Indeed, a person should use perfume to have a pleasant scent when among people”.
The imam noted that the following invalidate the fast:
1. Eating and drinking; 2. Cima; 3. Istimna. Istimna refers to performing an act that causes semen to be discharged by oneself, or causing semen to be discharged by engaging in an act other than sexual intercourse with another person; 4. Based on precautionary obligation, attributing lies to Allah, the Prophet (səlləllahu ələyhi və alihi və səlləm) and the Prophet's successors (ələyhimus-salam) (i.e., falsely speaking in their name); 5. Based on precautionary obligation, allowing dust to reach the throat; 6. Remaining in a state of janabah, hayd, or nifas until the morning adhan; 7. Administering an enema with liquids; 8. Intentionally vomiting.
