“The opening of the Zangezur corridor will expand our railway transport capabilities”
These words were stated by Fazil Mustafa, a member of the National Assembly, in a statement to Modern.az.
He noted that the development of railway infrastructure directly implies the expansion of economic and trade opportunities:
“Where railway transport develops, it is possible to speak of the development of transportation and the overall transport infrastructure in those countries. Azerbaijan has also set the opening of the Zangezur corridor as a primary goal.”
Fazil Mustafa noted that after the Baku–Kars railway is put into operation, it is important to increase the number of alternative routes:
“The existence of railway lines in the regions creates opportunities for faster and more convenient transportation to a certain extent.”
According to the deputy, more intensive operation of railway lines with Iran means strengthening trade:
“Access to Bandar Abbas port can also create conditions for expanding relations with China and African countries. Therefore, as long as such meetings carry real substance, they will also benefit the development of transport capabilities.”
Fazil Mustafa expressed hope that there will be positive changes in Iran's position on certain issues:
“The operationalization of the Baku–Astara railway line, the completion of the subsequent construction process of the project, and simultaneously the opening of the Zangezur corridor will create conditions for Azerbaijan to utilize these opportunities more effectively.”
It should be noted that on February 23, 2026, Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Farzaneh Sadegh, arrived in Baku to participate in the 17th meeting of the Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation with Azerbaijan.
Within the framework of the visit, issues such as a comprehensive assessment of the current state of cooperation between the two countries, the removal of existing obstacles, and the acceleration of the implementation of joint economic projects, particularly in the fields of transport, energy, trade, and cultural cooperation, were discussed.
