Around noon today, Iran launched a drone attack in the direction of Nakhchivan. As a result of the incident, 4 civilians were injured.
Azerbaijan's Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense have officially reacted to the drone attack.
The interesting aspect of the incident is whether it was intentional or accidental.
In a statement to Modern.az, political scientist Farhad Mammadov stated that the targeting of Nakhchivan Airport was not accidental:
"Both during the 12-day war and subsequently, as well as since the start of the war in Iran, Azerbaijan has maintained its position, voiced at all official levels: Azerbaijani territory and airspace cannot be used against Iran!
After the death of Supreme Leader Khamenei, the President of Azerbaijan offered condolences to the President of Iran and visited the Iranian Embassy in Baku. Can the Iranian leadership demonstrate something similar in other countries?! And in response, drones strike civilian infrastructure! Azerbaijan is once again facing the ingratitude of the Iranian leadership. During the current war, Iran strikes countries where US military bases are located, and the US attacks Iran from there. There are no US or Israeli military bases in Azerbaijan!
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has already summoned the Iranian Ambassador in Baku to present a note of protest and demand an explanation. However, Iran is currently in complete disarray. It is unclear how and by whom the decisions to strike were made".
The political scientist emphasized that Azerbaijan will begin consultations with Turkey:
"Azerbaijan will most likely begin consultations with Turkey in accordance with the Shusha Declaration and will take measures solely for its own defense. Arab countries facing Iranian attacks have not yet taken retaliatory measures. Turkey also did the same after an Iranian missile was shot down in Turkish airspace. However difficult it may be, we must be patient and calm.
Experience shows that Azerbaijan can withstand attacks and take retaliatory measures when necessary. Azerbaijan is not an Arab country. Millions of Azerbaijani Turks live in Iran, and they are already considering to what extent their government can ensure their security from US-Israeli attacks and very soon from Kurdish armed groups".
