“After the Spanish government announced its refusal to cooperate in a military operation against Iran, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian immediately wrote a thank-you note to Spain on social media. However, Masoud Pezeshkian neither called his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev regarding the drones launched at Nakhchivan yesterday, nor did he at least share a status on social media clarifying the issue.”
According to **Modern.az**, political commentator Elkhan Shahinoglu said this while commenting on Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's silence after the drone attack on Nakhchivan.
“Most likely, Masoud Pezeshkian seriously considered this yesterday but simply did not risk calling Baku or sharing a status. Because if Masoud Pezeshkian had called Ilham Aliyev, he would either have had to apologize or say that “the matter is being investigated.” Apparently, Pezeshkian thought that if he chose one of these two options, he would face the IRGC generals who govern the country and adopt an anti-Azerbaijani stance. However, Pezeshkian is not unaware that his silence undermines the partnership relations between him and Ilham Aliyev. Yet, normal relations had been established between the presidents of the two countries,” E. Shahinoglu stated.
According to the expert, Iran is following the same path as Russia:
“After Russia shot down an Azerbaijani civilian aircraft with a missile, it initially denied the incident; although an apology followed, no compensation was paid, and the perpetrators were not punished, which is why questions in the relations between the two countries have not been resolved. Iran, too, is currently denying it like Russia, operating on the principle of “we did not launch drones at Nakhchivan,” but this approach will lead the already question-filled relations between the two countries into a new phase of tension. Therefore, Masoud Pezeshkian's call to Ilham Aliyev is necessary.”
