Due to the death of Ilia II, head of the Georgian Orthodox Church, holiday celebrations in Georgia are cancelled.

Modern.az reports that in the Kvemo-Kartli region, predominantly populated by ethnic Azerbaijanis, Novruz celebrations will not be held on this occasion.

Specifically, the municipalities of Gardabani and Marneuli have cancelled celebrations related to Novruz and Ramadan holidays.

The decision was made in connection with national mourning. In the statement, the patriarch's death was called "a great, historic loss", and it was emphasized that he had been a symbol of spiritual strength and unity for decades.

It should be recalled that Ilia II passed away on March 17 at the age of 93. National mourning has been declared in the country until March 22. The funeral ceremony will be held on March 22 at Sioni Cathedral.
