Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on US leader Donald Trump to take a firm stance on sanctions against Russia and the cessation of the war.
Modern.az reports that Zelensky stated this in an interview with "Sky News", saying that the only way to stop the fighting is to provide security guarantees beforehand.
“I want all agreements to be reached before the war ends. A document supported by the US and European partners is needed. For this, President Trump's firm stance is crucial,” he emphasized.
Zelensky also called on Trump to take personal steps to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin:
“I believe that the US is strong enough. Trump can give us the necessary number of air defense systems; the US reserves are sufficient for this. The US can also impose sanctions that would hit the Russian economy. Trump has the power to intimidate Putin,” the Ukrainian leader noted.
He reminded that the European Union has already imposed 18 sanctions packages against Russia, emphasizing that a decisive step is now expected from the US.
Touching upon Russian unmanned aerial vehicles entering the territory of NATO countries, Zelensky assessed this as the Kremlin leader testing the alliance's readiness:
“Putin is testing NATO's diplomatic and political capabilities, and also observing what reaction this will cause among the population. This is also a message: "Do not give additional air defense systems to Ukraine; you can keep them for yourselves,” he stated.
