Political tension continues within Turkey's opposition Republican People's Party (CHP).

Modern.az reports that a group of party representatives appealed to the Supreme Election Council, claiming that the extraordinary congress to be held on September 21 was illegal. However, the Council rejected the appeal.

Ahmet Yener, Chairman of the Council, stated that there is no legal problem in holding the extraordinary 22nd congress: “The appeal for the cancellation of the congress was deemed illegal and rejected.”

With this decision, there are no obstacles remaining for the CHP's congress to be held on Sunday. It should be noted that this is the opposition party's 4th congress in the last 2 years.

It should be recalled that at the party's 38th congress last year, party leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu handed over his position to Özgür Özel.

The Ankara Public Prosecutor's Office has concluded its investigation into the legal violations that occurred at that congress and has prepared an indictment against 12 individuals. Among them are Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, Izmir Mayor Cemil Tuğay, and the head of the party's Istanbul branch, Özgür Çelik.

The Public Prosecutor's Office demands up to three years of imprisonment and a ban on engaging in political activities for the accused individuals. In the indictment, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu was recognized as a victim. Although he was invited to give a statement, he did not appear at the prosecutor's office.
