Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the adoption of a new Constitution will help eliminate the main problem of Armenian democracy – the separation of the judicial system from the people.

Modern.az reports that Pashinyan made this statement at the Armenia Democracy Forum.

According to the Prime Minister, the current justice system lacks an “organic connection” with society and operates in isolation, which undermines trust in it.

"Power belongs to the people, and any authority must emanate from them. Today, I see a serious systemic problem: in Armenia, the judicial power is completely separated from the people," Pashinyan noted.

Within the framework of discussions on the new Constitution project, ideas are being put forward that, in his opinion, should eliminate this gap. One of the initiatives is the introduction of a jury trial system.

The Prime Minister emphasized that until this problem is resolved, it is impossible to ensure the full development of democracy. He also noted that previously, court decisions were often made under the dictate of external interests and used as part of a “hybrid war.”

Pashinyan had previously stated the importance of adopting a new Constitution. Justice Minister Srbuhi Galyan announced that a draft document is currently being prepared.
