The Taliban leadership has released US citizen Amir Amiri. He had been detained in Afghanistan since December 2024.
Modern.az reports that US Secretary of State Marko Rubio made a statement regarding the issue. According to him, although the number of Americans detained in Afghanistan has increased in recent years, President Donald Trump continues his efforts to bring all of them back:
“Trump will not rest until all Americans return home...”, Rubio noted.
Rubi also thanked Qatar for its mediation. According to "Associated Press", the release process took place within the framework of an agreement between Afghanistan and the US regarding “prisoner exchange and normalization of relations”.
Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi stated that this decision is not political, but humanitarian and legal in nature.
