The US administration has announced a new peace plan to stop Israel's war in Gaza and determine the future governance model of the region.
Modern.az reports that a notable point in the document is the designation of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and US President Donald Trump as key figures in the interim governance of Gaza.
What does the plan consist of?
According to the unveiled document, Gaza will be governed by a “technocratic and politically neutral Palestinian committee.” The committee will be responsible for daily public services and municipal operations. However, the document does not specify which Palestinians will participate in this process. Hamas will not participate in the governance process.
This committee will operate under the supervision of an international p called the “Peace Council.” Donald Trump will chair the Council, and Tony Blair will also be among its members.
The mention of Tony Blair's name in this process has been met with protest among both Palestinians and international experts. It was particularly recalled that Blair faced significant criticism for the “weapons of mass destruction” claim on the eve of the Iraq War in 2003. Blair's negative image in the region, stemming from British colonialism, is also emphasized.
“We have already experienced British colonialism. When Blair's name is mentioned, everyone remembers the Iraq War,” stated Mustafa Barghouti, leader of the Palestinian National Initiative. UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese reacted sharply, saying, “Tony Blair? Absolutely not! Hands off Palestine.”
Trump's plan has been positively received in a joint statement by some Muslim countries and in a declaration by the Palestinian Authority. The document states that funding for Gaza's reconstruction will be channeled through this governing p.
Tony Blair, for his part, called Trump's idea a “courageous and intelligent plan.”
It should be recalled that as a result of the war that has been ongoing for months in Gaza, tens of thousands of people have died, and the entire population has been displaced.
