“Yesterday, the fifth attempt at a “Maidan” in Georgia failed. Any attempts to create unrest in the country will be prevented, and those responsible will be punished”.

Modern.az reports that this was stated by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze at a briefing he held.

According to him, “national movement activists” have attempted to overthrow the government and create unrest for the fifth time.

“Yesterday, the state gave a fitting response to these attempts. We have a responsibility to our voters to completely neutralize the collective “national movement” and foreign agencies in order to establish a healthy, democratic political system in the country”, - the Prime Minister said.

I. Kobakhidze noted that many people will be severely punished for violence against the state and law enforcement agencies.

It should be recalled that a rally organized by the opposition was held in Tbilisi yesterday. Participants attacked the Presidential Palace and entered the residence's territory. Additional police forces were deployed to the area. As a result of clashes between the parties, 6 protesters and 32 police officers were injured.

The five main organizers of the rally - Irakli Nadiradze, a member of the United National Movement Party, Murtaz Zodelava, a member of the party's political council, Lasha Beridze, Paata Manjgaladze, Secretary General of the “Agmashenebeli Strategy” party, and Paata Burchuladze, leader of the “Rustaveli Avenue” movement - have been detained. They are accused of calling for the overthrow of the government in Georgia and organizing group violence. For these criminal acts, a sentence of up to 9 years of imprisonment is applied.
