US President Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of expanding operations against Venezuelan drug cartels.
According to Trump, drug traffickers have started using land routes rather than primarily sea routes, and Washington is ready to prevent this activity “by military means.”
Modern.az reports that Trump spoke about this during his speech at the main base of the US Navy in Norfolk, Virginia.
“They are no longer coming by sea; now we must control the land routes, because they will be forced to choose this path. But let me tell you, this will not end well for them,” – Trump noted.
The White House chief added that the US military has once again struck a boat carrying drugs. “Each of these boats is responsible for the deaths of 25,000 Americans and the destruction of families. In this regard, we are doing a good deed. Last night, we destroyed another one,” – Trump emphasized.
Washington accuses the Venezuelan authorities of not taking sufficient measures in the fight against drug trafficking. In recent months, the US Navy has destroyed at least three speedboats in the international waters of the Caribbean Sea. It is claimed that 18 people were on board and were transporting drugs from Venezuela.
Trump also stated during his speech at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly on September 23 that the US armed forces will continue to fight Venezuelan drug cartels, including groups associated with the name of President Nicolas Maduro. According to US media reports, air and ground strikes by Washington on cartel facilities in Venezuelan territory are not ruled out in the coming weeks.
