Modern.az reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin monitored the progress of the tests.
Putin noted that the country has successfully tested a cruise missile named “Burevestnik” with “unlimited flight range.”
According to information released by the Kremlin, Putin discussed this at a meeting with Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, and other military commanders. He stated that this week, within the framework of exercises of Russia's strategic offensive forces, training and combat launches were carried out for “all three components of the strategic nuclear forces,” and new weapon samples were tested.
According to Gerasimov, in the test conducted on October 21, the “Burevestnik” missile covered a distance of approximately 14,000 kilometers and remained airborne for nearly 15 hours. He noted that the missile's technical characteristics allow it to “accurately strike highly protected targets anywhere in the world.”
Putin, in turn, emphasized that this missile is “a unique weapon with no analogues in the world.” According to him, the preparation of the appropriate infrastructure for the deployment of this weapon should now begin:
“This is an unparalleled product. Its application options must be determined, and preparations for its deployment in the Armed Forces must be made. Russia's nuclear forces are currently at the highest level in the world.”
Putin first spoke about “Burevestnik” in March 2018 during his address to the Federal Assembly. At that time, Putin stated that the missile's flight range is not limited and its trajectory is “unpredictable.”
Experts, however, say that Russia's nuclear test is being conducted against the backdrop of heavy and long-range weapons being supplied to Ukraine, and Putin is using this test to warn the West.
