California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that he might participate in the 2028 presidential elections.

Modern.az reports that he stated this in an interview with "CBS News Sunday Morning".

Newsom said that he would “seriously consider” this decision after the midterm elections in 2026:

“If I said otherwise, I would be lying. Let fate decide,” he added.

Newsom's term as governor will end in January 2027. According to California law, he cannot run for a third consecutive term. He was first elected in 2018, and for the second time in 2021.

Currently, Newsom has put forward a bill called “Proposition 50”. The document will allow Democrats to change the boundaries of electoral districts in California. The governor stated that this initiative is a response to the Trump administration's attempts to change district maps in Texas.

Newsom stated that he remains in contact with President Biden even after he withdrew from the race. He also has close relations with former President Barack Obama.

Among other possible candidates in the Democratic camp are Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. Former Vice President Kamala Harris also did not rule out running for president again in the future in an interview with the BBC, stating her belief that a female president in the U.S. is “inevitable”.
