The Maldives has become the first country to implement a cigarette ban for the new generation.
Modern.az reports on this, referring to "The Guardian" newspaper.
Specifically, effective from November 1, 2025, the purchase, use, or acquisition of tobacco products is prohibited for citizens born after January 1, 2007.
The ban applies to all types of tobacco products, and retailers are required to verify the age of buyers.
This measure also applies to tourists. Furthermore, a complete ban on e-cigarettes and vapes remains in effect for everyone, regardless of age. Fines have been imposed for violations of the rules.
The publication notes that New Zealand could have been the first country to adopt this law. However, although the law was supposed to come into force in July 2024, it was repealed by the new government in November 2023 to finance tax cuts.
