Syria's transitional president Ahmed al-Sharaa stated that the Russian leadership holds a different position on the issue of extraditing deposed president Bashar al-Assad to Damascus.
Modern.az reports that he spoke about this in an interview he gave to Fox News television channel after a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House.
Ahmed al-Sharaa stated that Russia “in one way or another” participated in the war that took place in Syria:
“Russia inevitably participated in the war waged against Syria. One of the agreements signed between our country and Russia provides for the extradition of wanted persons, including Bashar al-Assad, to Syria. However, the Russians have a different opinion on this matter.”
Al-Sharaa added that the Justice Commission established in Syria aims to ensure the accountability of all former regime representatives, including the former president:
“Justice must be established. We have established the Justice Commission for this purpose, and all former regime members, including Bashar al-Assad, must answer for their actions.”
It should be recalled that Ahmed al-Sharaa had a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in October. According to “The Guardian” newspaper, Putin paid special attention during the meeting to two main military facilities in Syria - the naval base in Tartus and the Hmeymim airbase.
Syria's new leader, however, assured Putin that the new government in Damascus would remain committed to all agreements signed between Russia and the previous government.
According to “The Guardian”, the main goal for Ahmed al-Sharaa is the trial in Syria of the deposed former president Bashar al-Assad and representatives of his regime who fled to Moscow.
In Syria, where the civil war began in 2011, the Bashar al-Assad regime was overthrown in 2024. Ahmed al-Sharaa, as transitional president, states that he is working to gain international legitimacy and restore justice over the former regime.
