Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) is preparing for its next congress on November 28–30. Ahead of the 39th congress to be held in Ankara, there is an expectation of political tension and structural change.
The CHP, holding its third congress in the last year, two of which were extraordinary, will this time put its renewed party program to a vote after 17 years. Extensive changes are also expected at the leadership level, and it is reported that some politicians from former alliance partners will be included in the leadership.
It is emphasized that the congress is taking place at a critical stage, both politically and legally. Due to ongoing investigations concerning the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and the party's legal status, the CHP leadership accelerated the process and decided on an ordinary congress.
It has been announced that the political messages of the congress will be built upon the slogans of “power, struggle, and justice.” The CHP leadership intends to expand its alliance strategy in the context of the upcoming local and parliamentary elections.
In a statement to Modern.az, the Party's foreign policy coordinator İlhan Üzgel stated that within the framework of the struggle, Chairman Özgür Özel, elected at the congress held two years ago, organizes two rallies every week.
"He is a leader much loved and appreciated by our people. The CHP remains the leading party in public opinion polls".
The deputy chairman stated that the Party won the court case filed against it: "However, those who filed the lawsuit have appealed to a higher court, which is a long process".
İ.Üzgel said that the congress will convene at the end of this month. Özgür Özel is expected to be re-elected as leader with strong support, as before: "At the congress, the party's program will be discussed and its final form will be given. The main themes of the program will be justice, freedom, and development".
He added that the economic situation in Turkey is severe, and inflation is very high: "Our citizens' trust in the legal system has also significantly decreased. Our party promises justice and economic development to our people in the new era".
