In Armenia, starting from the winter conscription of 2025, the mandatory military service period will be reduced from 24 months to 18 months.
Modern.az reports that this was stated by the country's Minister of Defense Suren Papikyan on November 24, during the discussion of the draft law on amendments to the law "On Military Service and the Status of Military Personnel" at a meeting of the Standing Parliamentary Commission on Defense and Security.
The amendment to the law envisages a reduction in mandatory military service, particularly due to the increase in the number of contract servicemen.
"In recent years, active steps have been taken to expand contract service. In particular, one can note the "Defense of the Homeland" program, the implementation of a professional sergeant corps system, the military personnel certification system, as well as the process of organizing military service on a contract basis with the retention of early military pensions in border military units," Papikyan stated. He highly appreciated the results achieved. According to the head of the Ministry of Defense, these contribute to increasing the attractiveness and expansion of military service on a contract basis.
In this regard, the government deemed it appropriate to reduce the 24-month mandatory service period for conscript soldiers by 6 months, starting from the winter conscription of 2025, thereby establishing a new period of 18 months.
