In July 2026, a new UN Secretary-General will be elected. The current Secretary-General, António Guterres, has led the organization since 2017, and his term of office expires next year.

The new leader will first be selected by the UN Security Council, and then the candidacy will be approved by the General Assembly.

According to the rules, there is no term limit for election to this position, but so far no one has served as Secretary-General for more than 10 years.

Modern.az reports that countries have already begun to put forward their candidates.

The Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially announced the candidacy of Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, for the position of UN Secretary-General.

The Ministry characterized Grossi as a person with “a brilliant career, diplomatic experience, and deep knowledge in the field of international relations.” According to reports, he is known as a skilled diplomat who facilitates dialogue in resolving global crises and conflicts. Grossi's election as head of the IAEA for two consecutive terms is also considered an indicator of his leadership qualities.

Among those wishing to become the new head of the UN is another prominent figure. Rebeka Grynspan, Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development, has expressed her intention to participate in the 2026 elections.

The elections to be held in July 2026 will be an important political milestone for the UN. The new Secretary-General, to be determined by the Security Council's selection and the General Assembly's approval, will play a decisive role in issues concerning the world, such as conflicts, the climate crisis, and global security.
