The unexpected political change in Jordan has led to serious discussions in society.

King Abdullah II's departure from the country under the guise of a “private visit” and Crown Prince Hussein's swearing-in as regent have strengthened the possibility of a new political phase beginning in the Hashemite Kingdom.

Modern.az reports that the information regarding the king's departure from the country was disseminated by Jordan's "Petra" state agency.

The brief and official statement raised more questions. Where is the King? Why are the purpose and duration of the visit not disclosed?

Following the King's departure from the country, Crown Prince Hussein immediately began acting as regent. He represented his father at official events, including the 75th anniversary of the Jordan Football Association. He was accompanied by his wife, Princess Rajwa.

The sudden occurrence of the event, while simultaneously creating the impression of a meticulously pre-prepared protocol, drew attention. An article published on "Haqqin.az" states that in recent years, the granting of broader powers to Hussein in the fields of defense, diplomacy, and governance already signaled a gradual transfer of power. His swearing-in as regent this time indicates that this process is approaching an irreversible stage.

The King's sudden departure from the country has once again brought to the forefront theories related to his health. Although there were reports of a minor operation in 2025 and a canceled visit in the autumn, the palace had stated that these incidents were not serious. Currently, the reason for the visit is not disclosed.

It should be recalled that earlier this year, during a meeting at the White House, King Abdullah's frequent blinking in front of cameras was widely discussed on social media, and it was claimed that the monarch was under psychological pressure due to the tense political situation.

While Jordanian society has not yet forgotten the claims of a “palace coup attempt” involving the King's brother, Prince Hamzah, in 2021, the new regency step has strengthened the possibilities of further political transformation. In Jordan, the concept of “regent” carries significant weight and implies a temporary, albeit significant, shift in the center of decision-making power.
