Tens of thousands of people in Madrid protested against the government, demanding early parliamentary elections in Spain.
Modern.az reports that, according to “The Guardian”, the protests were led by the conservative People's Party (PP).
The protest was held under the slogan “Mafia, or democracy?”. The mass march was organized after the arrest of former transport minister José Luis Ábalos three days ago in connection with a corruption case. Ábalos was once considered one of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's closest political allies.
The party announced that approximately 80,000 people participated in the protest, but a representative of the Madrid regional government stated that this figure was approximately half that.
The leader of the People's Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, called the current functioning of parliament “absurd” and emphasized that it could not continue in this manner. Speaking against the backdrop of Ábalos's arrest, he stated, “Sanchismo is political, economic, institutional, social, and moral corruption. Sanchismo is already in custody and must leave power.”
The government, however, rejected the accusations. Justice Minister Félix Bolaños accused the People's Party and the far-right Vox party of “competing with each other to make the most absurd statements” about Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
