Washington's gradual withdrawal from processes has left Europe alone in security matters.
Modern.az reports that "The Wall Street Journal" wrote about this.
Citing a high-ranking French official, the newspaper notes that if Europe had not created an obstacle, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump would have reached an agreement on Ukraine long ago. The source emphasized that Europe is currently “completely alone” because the US is not continuing its commitments at the previous level.
According to the information, US President's special envoy Steve Witkoff will go to Moscow on December 2 and participate in another round of talks with Russia. The newspaper notes that Witkoff is visiting Moscow for the sixth time this year, although he has not yet visited Ukraine even once. This fact has raised additional questions in Europe regarding Washington's priorities.
On the other hand, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will not attend the meeting of NATO countries' foreign ministers on December 3, and his deputy will replace him. WSJ writes that the last time the head of the State Department missed such a high-level meeting was in 1999. This strengthens the view within the alliance that Washington's attention is directed elsewhere.
The journal recalls that the leak of a phone conversation between Witkoff and Russian President's advisor Yuri Ushakov, as well as the emergence of information related to the “peace plan,” has further increased concern in Europe. These documents created the impression that the administration places more importance on normalizing relations with Russia and expanding economic cooperation.
