Marta Kos, High Commissioner for European Union (EU) Enlargement, stated that the creation of a quadrilateral format encompassing Yerevan, Baku, Ankara, and Brussels is being discussed for opening communications in the South Caucasus.
Modern.az reports that Marta Kos stated this during a briefing with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan in Brussels.
According to her, the European Union is ready to facilitate the normalization process of relations between Armenia on one side, and Azerbaijan and Turkey on the other. Brussels is working with Baku and Ankara on this issue.
She stated that much can be achieved by ensuring connectivity between countries in the South Caucasus – but this is only possible when peace is ensured between Yerevan and Baku.
Kos noted that she recently put forward an initiative in Tashkent for the creation of a platform where countries, international organizations, and businesses would unite to attract investment for the southern route project between Europe and Central Asia.
“The TRIPP project is only one part of this connection; we must connect West and East. We are discussing a quadrilateral format – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and the EU. We started discussions at the ministerial meeting in October and then held an investment forum in Tashkent,” Kos noted.
It should be recalled that on August 8, in Washington, the leaders of Armenia, the USA, and Azerbaijan signed a joint declaration on the peaceful resolution of the conflict. According to the agreement, Armenia will lease the Zangezur corridor to the USA for 99 years. The corridor, to be named “Trump Route” (TRIPP), will create a land connection between the main part of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan. The USA plans to lease the land through which the “Trump Route” will pass to a consortium responsible for infrastructure and management.
