Gürsel İsmayılzadə, who served as Azerbaijan's ambassador to Japan for many years and was recalled in October of this year, has received a new appointment.
Modern.az reports that, according to “Yeni Sabah”, the experienced diplomat has been appointed as the Head of the Main Department for Eastern Europe, South Caucasus, Western and Central Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan.
Today, he met with Birol Akgün, Turkey's ambassador to Azerbaijan.
A post regarding this meeting was made on the social media account of the Turkish Embassy in Azerbaijan.
“Our Ambassador Birol Akgün paid a courtesy visit to Gürsel İsmayılzadə, who has been appointed to the Main Department for Europe, South Caucasus, Western and Central Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, which also includes the Turkey section,” the post stated.
It should be noted that Gürsel İsmayılzadə served as Azerbaijan's ambassador to Japan for 2 terms. He was first appointed to this position in August 2011.
Although, according to the law “On Diplomatic Service”, the term of service for Azerbaijan's ambassadors in foreign countries is 5 years, Gürsel İsmayılzadə's term of office continued until 2019 without these requirements being applied to him.
Recalled from Japan by order of President Ilham Aliyev in January 2019, G. İsmayılzadə was re-appointed as Azerbaijan's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Japan in March 2020.
He knows English, Japanese, Russian, and Arabic. He is married and has one child.
Gürsel İsmayılzadə is the son of the prominent archaeologist and scholar Qüdrət İsmayılzadə.
