Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa made statements in Al Jazeera's new documentary about the decisive events that took place in the country in the last days of 2024.
According to him, an unexpected message was received from Russia after opposition forces took control of the western part of Aleppo at the end of November.
The message contained these statements: “Stop here, take what you have captured, otherwise the situation will become even more tense.”
According to Modern.az, al-Sharaa noted that he understood after that warning that the collapse of the regime could not be prevented.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Sheibani, speaking in the film, confirmed that a series of secret negotiations were held between representatives of the opposition and Russia during that period. According to him, the parties discussed their own interests and also assessed how future Syria-Russia relations could be established.
After the city of Homs was fully brought under control on December 7, 2024, the opposition's large-scale offensive towards Damascus began. Al-Sharaa stated that the order to march on the capital was given at 01:30 AM, and forces had already entered the city by the morning of December 8.
Former President Bashar al-Assad had left the country and sought refuge in Russia during those days.
