Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev warned that the shallowing of the Caspian Sea could become irreversible.
Modern.az reports that he called on the international community to support efforts aimed at protecting the sea.
"As for the Caspian Sea, at the current rate of shallowing, this dangerous process could become irreversible and inevitably lead to ecological, socio-economic, and even political consequences. Kazakhstan has put forward an initiative to develop a special interstate program aimed at preventing the degradation of the ecosystem and the shallowing of the Caspian Sea," he stated.
“In general, in my opinion, water diplomacy requires close interstate coordination. Existing international institutions tend to operate in a fragmented manner within narrow mandates, which is not commensurate with the scale of growing water problems,” Tokayev added.
