The Cambodian Ministry of Defense announced an increase in strikes by the Thai armed forces on Cambodia's sovereign territory.
Modern.az reports that the ministry stated that Thai military personnel, using F-16 fighter jets, carried out air attacks on December 15 on northwestern Cambodia, including Siem Reap province, and dropped 2 bombs near a camp where internally displaced persons were settled.
According to recent information, as a result of Thailand's attacks, 12 civilians died, and 74 people were injured. Furthermore, due to clashes at the border, the number of Cambodians forced to leave their homes has reached 403,000. Approximately 208,000 of them are women, and 96,000 are children.
It should be noted that armed clashes began on December 7 on the Thailand-Cambodia border. The Thai side accuses Cambodia of initiating the clashes and violating the ceasefire agreement. The Thai army stated that Cambodia mobilized heavy weapons to the border, redeployed combat units, and prepared support elements that could strengthen military efforts. As a result of the fighting, the number of fatalities among Thai military personnel reached 9, and 120 people were injured. Due to the clashes, approximately 400,000 Thais were forced to leave their homes, and 3 civilians died.
The five-day clashes between the countries in July were halted through the mediation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and US President Donald Trump. The US President also participated in October in Kuala Lumpur in the signing ceremony of an expanded peace agreement between the two countries. In an interview with “The Wall Street Journal” on December 12, President Donald Trump threatened the governments of Thailand and Cambodia with imposing new tariffs on their products if hostilities between them were not ceased. Trump spoke with the prime ministers of Thailand and Cambodia on the same day.
