Turkey is discussing the possibility of abandoning the S-400 anti-aircraft missile system acquired from Russia, with the aim of normalizing relations with the US and rejoining the F-35 fighter jet production program.

Modern.az reports that "Bloomberg" agency has disseminated information on this matter.

According to the information, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan raised this topic during contacts with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week. However, Kremlin representatives have denied that such a discussion took place.

Washington had long demanded that Ankara abandon the S-400 system. This very issue led to the US imposing sanctions against Turkey and the country's removal from the F-35 program in 2019.

It is reported that abandoning the Russian-made air defense system could pave the way for the restoration of defense cooperation with the US and the lifting of restrictions. At the same time, Ankara is seeking compensation from Russia regarding the S-400. It is not ruled out that this compensation could be in the form of energy resource supplies.
