Greece, Israel, and Cyprus are considering the possibility of establishing a joint rapid reaction brigade in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
Modern.az reports that Cypriot media has disseminated information regarding this. The issue has come to the forefront during a period of intensified trilateral military and political consultations. It is reported that high-level meetings have been held recently, and new contacts are also planned.
According to information leaked to the media, the personnel strength of the military unit under discussion for establishment could be up to 2,500 people. Approximately 1,000 of these would be contributed by Greece and Israel, while about 500 military personnel are envisioned from Cyprus. The brigade is planned to operate not as a permanent base, but based on a flexible and rapid deployment mechanism.
Greek press, citing official sources, writes that this initiative envisages a flexible cooperation model capable of operating effectively on land, at sea, and in the air during potential crisis situations in the Eastern Mediterranean. Within the framework of the plan, air and naval support capabilities, including combat aviation, frigates, and submarines, are being discussed.
Greece's Rhodes and Karpathos islands, Cypriot territory, as well as military bases in Israel, are indicated as potential deployment areas. Concurrently, one of the main tasks of the potential formation is the protection of critical maritime infrastructure, including energy lines and submarine cables, as well as to respond promptly to the risks of escalating tensions in the region.
According to the information, a final decision regarding the establishment of the joint brigade has not yet been made. Discussions are in the initial stage and are being conducted within the framework of deepening dialogue among the three countries. Experts state that the three countries are forming a strategic alliance against Turkey.
