A road accident that occurred in the German state of Hesse on the evening of December 22 has caused serious public resonance in the country.
According to Modern.az, the person driving an "Audi" brand car veered into the oncoming lane near the Christmas market and crashed into pedestrians.
According to information, the driver was Asim B., a 32-year-old Azerbaijani citizen who had recently been living in the state of Hesse. After his arrest and initial questioning, he was placed in a psychiatric institution.
Although the preliminary results of the investigation indicate that his actions were deliberate, law enforcement agencies emphasize that there is no direct evidence at this stage that the incident was a terrorist act. During questioning, it was revealed that the suspect suffered from serious psychological problems.
According to investigation materials, Asim B. deliberately entered the oncoming lane near the market area, drove at high speed, and crashed into a parked car. Due to the force of the impact, that car was thrown towards a bus stop, and a 64-year-old woman sustained severe injuries.
The driver did not stop, continued his movement on the sidewalk, and hit several more pedestrians. The uncontrolled movement of the car was only stopped after colliding with another parked vehicle. A 29-year-old local resident who was at the scene neutralized the driver and detained him until a police patrol arrived.
An official statement released by the Hesse Prosecutor's Office and the state's Criminal Police Department indicates that there are serious grounds to believe the suspect acted deliberately while in a state of acute psychosis. At the same time, investigative bodies note that it is difficult to state a precise position regarding the motives, as the detained person is unable to give a consistent and logical statement.
