Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a decree on the appointment of former Minister of Economy and Finance Abdolnaser Hemmati as the new head of the Central Bank.
Modern.az reports that the decree was published on the Iranian President's website.
"I expect from you... special and maximum attention to supporting economic growth, protecting and increasing the value of the national currency, organizing and managing the foreign exchange market to achieve social justice, eliminating imbalances, and controlling liquidity growth", - the decree states.
On December 29, protests began in central Tehran due to the sharp fall of the Iranian rial.
Protesting business owners called on their colleagues to close their shops and join the movement. On the same day, Mohammad Farzin, the head of the Central Bank of Iran, resigned. Protests and rallies were also held among students at Tehran universities.
