It has been confirmed that the sabotage, which caused the power supply to thousands of homes and facilities in southwestern Berlin to be cut off, is linked to an extreme left-wing group.
Modern.az reports, citing the “Tagesspiegel” newspaper, that German law enforcement agencies have announced that an extreme left-wing organization called the “Vulkan Group” has claimed responsibility for the attack, which resulted in the burning of cables leading to the Lichtenfelde power station in the city's Steglitz-Zehlendorf district.
As a result of the incident, tens of thousands of residents in southwestern Berlin have been without electricity and heating since yesterday. The Berlin State Criminal Police Office has formed a special group to conduct an investigation regarding the letter sent claiming responsibility for the incident. The Federal Criminal Police Office and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution are also involved in the investigations.
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner stated that the attack bears the hallmarks of a politically motivated act of terrorism and announced that operational-search measures have been intensified to identify the perpetrators.
The electricity grid operator predicts that the full restoration of supply will be possible on January 8.
