The Armenian authorities plan to withdraw Russian border guards from the Akhurik border checkpoint, located on the Turkish border, in the near future.
Modern.az reports that the correspondent of “NEWS.am” website stated that they obtained information from sources in diplomatic circles regarding this.
According to the source, a decision has already been made regarding the transfer of direct management of the border checkpoint located at the Akhurik outpost, and even a flagpole has been installed in the area. However, Russian border guards will continue to remain at the outpost itself. Currently, the condition of the railway line extending from Armenia towards Turkey is being assessed.
According to information from other sources, Turkey has already started construction work in the area of the Margara border checkpoint. On the one hand, the commencement of construction by Turkey, and on the other hand, the planned involvement of the Akhurik checkpoint for use, indicate serious intentions by Turkey to open the border in the near future.
