US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that any country trading with Tehran would face a 25 percent tariff on its trade relations with the US.
Modern.az reports that Washington is currently evaluating possible response options to the events unfolding in Iran.
Iran is a member of OPEC, and according to the latest World Bank data, it exported its products to 147 countries in 2022. In terms of value, Iran's largest export item was fuel, while its main import products were intermediate goods, vegetables, machinery, and equipment.
Iran's largest trading partners are the following countries:
China
China is Iran's largest trading partner. According to World Bank data, Iran's exports to China amounted to 22 billion dollars in 2022, with more than half of this attributed to fuel. Imports from China totaled 15 billion dollars.
According to an analytical company, in 2025, China purchased over 80 percent of Iran's exported oil. Due to US sanctions, the circle of buyers for Iranian oil is limited; these sanctions aim to cut off funding for Tehran's nuclear program.
India
Bilateral trade between India and Iran amounted to 1.34 billion dollars in the first 10 months of 2025. India's main export products to Iran include basmati rice, fruits and vegetables, medicines, and other pharmaceutical products.
Turkey
According to sector and official sources, Turkey's exports to Iran amounted to 2.3 billion dollars in 2025, while imports for the 11 months of the year totaled 2.2 billion dollars.
If the potential US tariff decision comes into force, it could create serious economic and political risks for countries with extensive trade relations with Iran.
