It should be noted that the protests that began in Iran on December 29 after the sharp depreciation of the national currency, the rial, turned into anti-government demonstrations in most major cities of the country. Up to 2000 people are reported to have died in the protests. On January 12, the protests subsided after mass demonstrations held by hundreds of thousands of people to support the government.
