The European Parliament (EP) has frozen the ratification process of the trade agreement between the European Union and the United States after US President Donald Trump's threats regarding Greenland.
Modern.az reports that the political groups of the EP have released information on this matter.
Iratxe García Pérez, chair of the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group, cited by the “France-Presse” agency, stated that most political groups supported the suspension of the ratification of the trade agreement concluded between the EU and the US in 2025.
The US President has repeatedly made statements about the necessity of Greenland's annexation to the US. He also put forward a proposal to purchase the island during his first presidential term. In March 2025, he expressed his certainty that it could be annexed.
Greenland is part of Denmark with autonomous territory status. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed a Treaty on the Defense of Greenland, in addition to their NATO alliance obligations. According to that document, the US undertook the obligation to defend the island from possible aggression.
