British Prime Minister Keir Starmer does not intend to join the Peace Council for Gaza initiative proposed by US President Donald Trump.
Modern.az reports, citing “The Financial Times”, that British officials do not consider it appropriate to join this p, which demands one billion dollars for government membership and includes Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to the information, at a time when US-UK relations are already strained, Trump's assessment that Britain returning sovereignty over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius would be “complete weakness” has caused dissatisfaction in London. The US and Britain have a joint military air base on the Chagos Islands.
Although Starmer stated this week that he consulted with allies about the terms of the Peace Council, sources close to the government emphasize that his joining such a p is not realistic. One official said: “Spending one billion dollars of taxpayers' money to sit on a council that includes Putin is unacceptable.”
