Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wants the position of speaker in the future parliament to be held by Lilit Makunts, the country's former ambassador to the US.
Modern.az reports that this was stated in a report by the “Hraparak" newspaper.
It was noted that for this purpose, he wants Makunts to gather the most votes during the intra-party voting for the approval of the election list.
The newspaper reports that the ruling “Civil Contract” Party will hold a congress on February 15 to approve the election list. 1000 representatives of the party will select the first 50 candidates from the already approved list of 280 people.
The newspaper notes that Pashinyan must demonstrate the democratic nature of the elections, and therefore intends to hold the elections in two stages. Firstly, representatives will simply select 50 candidates (without determining their position on the list), and the position will be determined in the second stage.
It is precisely in this second stage that the prime minister intends to secure a high position for former ambassador Makunts.
Earlier, the "Joğovurd" newspaper reported that the ruling party planned to approve the composition and numbers of the election list via live broadcast within three days.
It should be recalled that parliamentary elections in Armenia will be held in June 2026.
The Armenian parliament is currently headed by Alen Simonyan.
